Toward the end of the Creative Revolution Theater Company's inspired production of Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio, Barry Champlain, who's the talk-show-host character in the play, tells his radio audience, "You're like little children under the blanket, afraid of the bogeyman, but you can't live without him."
It's a great line, among many in the play now showing in Thornton, and it's a big reason why people listen to conservative talk radio. They're scared, and they feed on their own paranoia.
Talk radio is also a place where people find a community of the like-minded, who validate each other's beliefs, whereas in the real world, off the airwaves, in the mainstream media, they often fall into the lunatic-fringe category.
Bogosian's play, based partly on the life and murder of Denver talk-radio host Alan Berg, depicts a talk-radio world, different from today's, where calls are more personal and raw, and the talk-show host mostly berates callers.
"Are you as ugly as you sound?" Champlain asks a caller at one point during the play. Later he tells another caller, "Yes, the world is a terrible place…everything is screwed up, and you like it that way."
Today, talk radio is mostly right-wing Republican not nihilistic or truth-telling, and certainly not liberal, like Berg was, if you heard him in Denver in the 1980s.
Talk-radio hosts will still beat up on callers or at least disagree with them, but they seem more desperate to please them, to legitimize their craziness, and hope they call back, to keep their audience from shrinking further. And to try to build political power for the Republican right.
So the talk-radio world you see in Bogosian's Talk Radio, free from right-wing Republican talking points, is actually more interesting, even if it's a bit dated, than what you hear on the radio now.
The play's simple plot, like the 1988 movie with the same name, centers on Champlain's response to callers during a single night's show, as he gets more wasted, drinking whiskey and snorting cocaine.
Partisan politics doesn't come up at all, as Champlain abuses everyone from a woman who likes "I love Lucy" to a man upset about dog poop in his neighborhood. Champlain dismisses on a black man who says he likes Jews and bigot who says he hates them.
I don't know a lot about theater, but I can tell you that Champlain is performed with such complete and thorough passion and believability by actor Michael Occhuizzo that you're left thinking he needs to get a job on a Denver talk-radio station as soon as possible.
I'm half serious, because talk radio, if done right, is much like a form of theater or reality entertainment–if it doesn't get dragged down by the formula of faux politics and ginned-up paranoia that radio-station corporations seem to want today.
The best talk-radio hosts are artists/actors/entertainers themselves, as well as intellectuals, like Berg, driven to the talk medium as their form of expression.
As Champlain tells his audience in his last drunken lines of the play, before he leaves and ostensibly gets gunned down in the parking lot: "You're pathetic… I guess we're stuck with one another."
Do your best to catch one of the play's last performances this Thurs., Fri., and Sat. at 7 p.m. It's staged in a former retail space in the North Valley Tech Center in Thornton, an eerie, mostly vacant place that conjures up the strange world of talk radio, in Berg's time and today.

Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ).The red-on-red hits just keep coming in the wake of Colorado GOP representatives' request for disaster relief monies for last month's floods in Colorado, after having voted against those same funds in January as attached to the Hurricane Sandy relief bill. As the Washington Post's Reid Wilson reports:
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Thursday called out four Colorado Republicans in Congress who opposed a bill to fund disaster relief programs in his state, then turned around and pushed for federal aid when their state was hit by devastating floods.
“They’re hypocrites. That’s what they are,” Christie said of the Colorado Republicans during a telephone town hall meeting Thursday night, in comments first reported by the Newark Star-Ledger. But, he added: “We can’t be vindictive. Because we have to be concerned about the actual people that are being hurt.”
Reps. Cory Gardner (R), Scott Tipton (R), Doug Lamborn (R) and Mike Coffman (R) all voted against a $50 billion supplemental appropriations bill that would have funded relief programs aimed at helping New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in the wake of last year’s devastating Hurricane Sandy. The measure passed with 192 Democratic votes and only 49 Republican votes; 179 Republicans and one Democrat voted against providing aid.
As reported this week by New Jersey media outlets, the money sought by the Colorado delegation originally came from the Sandy relief legislation that Colorado Republicans voted against last January. As the Denver Post's Allison Sherry reports today, Rep. Cory Gardner is standing by his original explanation that he voted against the Sandy relief bill as retaliation for the stripping of funds for Colorado from the bill–while Rep. Mike Coffman and Doug Lamborn say they voted against on simpler ideological grounds.
Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, said the final Sandy bill was "overly generous," and that's why he voted against it.
As Wilson at the Washington Post reports, New Jersey Sen. Jeff Chiesa, recently appointed by Christie, put a hold on Colorado's request until transportation officials assured him that they could get the money to fund some $400 million for road repairs in Colorado from a source other than the Hurricane Sandy legislation that Colorado Republicans voted against. That hold has been lifted, says Wilson, but Sherry reports a final reconciliation of House and Senate versions is on hold until the shutdown impasse is resolved.
We've said it several times now: this is a horrifying embarrassment, not just for these four persona non grata Republican representatives, but for the whole state–an example of blatant hypocrisy and selfishness now linked to "the state of Colorado" more than any individual politician. Obviously there is a partisan distinction that can be made, but is that really enough for the people of Colorado from both parties who would never have approved of this hypocrisy? What can Colorado Republicans with any sense of community say? Or, dare we say it…Colorado Republican flood victims?
Folks, this matters. It matters to all of us. And it isn't about partisanship. It's about being better neighbors and citizens than this. We know the last thing we can expect from the Colorado Republican congressional delegation is an apology to the victims of Hurricane Sandy, including their fellow Republicans who are rightly criticizing them. But on a level that transcends politics, we really wish they would.

On Friday the Kansas Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, invalidated the air pollution permit granted to Sunflower Electric Power Corporation for their proposed Holcomb coal plant. This is a significant development in what has become a series of [failed] attempts by Sunflower, who is nothing more than a proxy for Tri-State Generation and Transmission, to construct what would be one of the last coal plants in the United States. In May, the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected a request from Sunflower to overturn a 2012 federal judge's ruling that put the project on hold. The decision meant the Rural Utilities Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, must complete an environmental study before deciding whether to grant federal consent for the new unit.
Even in light of losing this latest judicial spanking, the Sunflower Electric response is "it will continue to take the steps necessary to preserve and advance the project."
Sunflower is plagued with financial challenges and owes hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer-subsidized loans. Today, they seek forgiveness of portions of the loan principal so that private financing for this project can be secured; they are also attempting to circumvent due process through an amendment to the pending Farm Bill. Even before a single shovel of earth is turned, financing and environmental compliance challenges should be ringing every bell in the proverbial "fire house".
The construction of this plant wouldn't be plausible at all if it weren't for Tri-State committing the purchasing power of its Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska & New Mexico rate payers to the Kansas project.
There is nothing cheap about coal. And there is an irony in the region's claim they are "fiercely independent". When you need the loan forgiveness of the American taxpayer to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars and the circumvention of the financial and judicial process to build a plant that you tout to your members as "cheap", perhaps its time to step back from the Kool-Aid and ask ones self the hard questions.
This is great news for renewable energy advocates on both sides of the Kansas line. Today 2.3 gigawatts of wind stand tall on the eastern plains of Colorado, providing much-needed tax base to our rural communities. These wind farm developments provide jobs and significant new tax base in our rural areas, important manufacturing jobs on the Front Range – and are the cheapest source of new power in the grid today.
The rejection of Holcomb, and the embrace of a changing energy paradigm by Tri-State would mean we on the eastern plains have only 
seen the tip of the iceberg of "what's possible". It's time to end the faux media campaign, the "War on Rural Colorado". It's patently false. Our real enemy is a Kansas coal plant – and this coal plant is the one thing standing between a future where rural Colorado is chained to decades of a 19th-century power supply – or one where we become a full participant in Colorado's "Innovation Economy". A future where we no longer dig for our fuel supplies – our energy will fall free from above and across the prairie; a future where our energy costs are no longer ever-increasing and volatile, but free. A future where our grid is distributed, resilient and secure.
A senior member of the "Beyond Coal" campaign summed up the Supreme Court decision best: “The proposed Holcomb coal plant is now a fading mirage on the plains."
