Arapahoe High School Shooting Victim Dies

Arapahoe High School shooting victim Claire Davis. Arapahoe High School shooting victim Claire Davis.

FOX 31, very sad news this Saturday evening:

Claire Davis, the 17-year-old student wounded in the shooting at Arapahoe High School last week, has died of her injuries, Littleton Adventist Hospital announced Saturday.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share that at 4:29 p.m. this afternoon, Claire Davis passed away, with her family at her side,” the hospital said in a Facebook post. “Claire’s death is immensely heartbreaking for our entire community, …our staff and our families.”

In the days since the attack, Davis had been the subject of a massive outpouring of support. Groups ranging from local equestrian team members to the international pop band One Direction had expressed their affection and worked to ease the burden on her family.

A public memorial service is reportedly being planned. In the meantime, please consider a donation to the Denver Foundation's Arapahoe High School Community Fund Honoring Claire Davis.

Photos: Colorado Newtown Shooting Remembrance Event

As the Denver Post's Austin Briggs reports:

Twenty-six times the sharp ringing of a bell cut through the crisp, cold air Saturday morning at the Cheesman Park Pavilion in honor of those killed one year ago in a shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The group, forgoing the usual moment of silence used to honor victims of violence, opted to ring bells, sing and pray.

"We're not going to be silent; we'll never be silent on this issue again," said Jennifer Hope, Colorado chapter leader for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, the group that organized the vigil.

Here's a little more of Jennifer Hope's speech yesterday:

A year ago, mothers across America got a shattering wake-up call. As we watched the tragedy unfold in Newtown, Connecticut, we imagined our own children in those classrooms, and our hearts broke. While we knew we could never truly imagine what these families were going through, we knew we had to do something. As we sat in our kitchens, at our jobs, in our cars, out with our children, each of us realized we could be silent no more.

Our hearts broke, but our eyes opened. We awoke to a national nightmare: A country where every day nearly eight children and teens are shot and killed. A country with the highest rate of gun violence of any developed country in the world. A country with a population so numb to the steady drumbeat of gun violence that many mass shootings aren’t even mentioned in the national news.

Over the past year, our devastation turned into conviction.

More photos from yesterday's event in Cheesman Park after the jump.

Stop Using Aurora Shooting Photos For Politics. Now.

UPDATE: Ken Buck's Senate campaign appears to have deleted this photo.

—–

Back in June, we called out a local conservative blog after they used a photo of President Barack Obama hugging Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper for an attack unrelated to the original photo's context. Seeking a photo of an unhappy Gov. Hickenlooper with Obama, they ended up using an image of Obama embracing Hickenlooper in the immediate aftermath of the Aurora theater shooting. To that blog's credit, once this was pointed out to them, they promptly removed the photo and apologized for misusing it.

This time, it's Ken Buck's 2014 U.S. Senate campaign:

The photo used in this graphic is a copyrighted Associated Press photo. Here's the accompanying caption:

And with that, it's time for Ken Buck to eat some fresh crow. With one final note to all Colorado Republicans going forward: photos of grieving officials following the Aurora shootings are off limits for political attacks. No exceptions.
