At Least She’s Not Your President

Not Your President Sanity, where art thou?

Roseanne Barr is a pretty well-known celebrity for Americans who grew up watching her TV show. The comedienne and macadamia nut farmer lived in Colorado for many years early in her career, and she made a return of sorts in 2012 when her name was on the ballot for President in our state as the nominee of the Peace and Freedom Party (PAF).

Roseanne ended up with 5,059 total votes in Colorado, which didn't get her anywhere close to the Presidency. And that's a good thing, because she has apparently gone completely insane. From Salon:

In her latest perplexing move, Barr, whose history of erratic behavior is as long as her career itself,  has written an open letter to Congress “regarding blackmail from the Executive Branch.” The subject alone is a tip-off to the dubious content within — as writer Jesse Berney noted on Twitter Tuesday, “If Obama is blackmailing Congress, he is the worst blackmailer of all time.” But the self-described “Peace and Freedom Party” candidate confidently states that the president has made “direct attacks against the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th amendments to the Constitution,” including “false flag terror attacks to remove the 2nd amendment (Boston Marathon; case in point).” She goes on to cite the “Nazi origins” of “ObamaCare” and to muse, “Some of you in the congress live alternative lifestyles. Some of you cheat on your spouses. Why should the camera only be pointed on you?- it’s time the camera was pointed on Obama.” The letter includes 41 pages of footnotes “detailing the blackmail of congress.” They feature SPECIAL REPORTS of lurid “lesbian sexual trysts,” “underage male prostitutes” and “Obama’s gay trysts.” On the Daily Banter, Chez Pazienza notes, “Almost all of them [are] sourced to batshit crazy Internet conspiracy theorist Wayne Madsen.”

We're almost impressed by the level of political crazy here. You know you've reached a pinnacle of conspiracy nut nonsense when others reply with, "Wait, what?" Is Obama a lesbian? We're confused.

At Least You Don’t Have to Replace a Cat

Mayor Stubbs has his own Wall Street Journal portrait. Mayor Stubbs has his own Wall Street Journal portrait.

Replacing a beloved elected official with nearly two decades of public service is a difficult task for anyone. Replacing a beloved elected official that also happens to be a cat is a apparently a real problem in Alaska. From the Wall Street Journal:

The mayor of this tiny village has been shot, fallen into a restaurant fryer, jumped off a moving truck and been mauled by a dog. Now the burning question around these parts is: Has Mayor Stubbs used up his nine lives?

Stubbs is a cat—but that didn't stop residents of this unincorporated burg of 876 from naming him their mayor 16 years ago…

…But townsfolk are being forced to contemplate regime change, after the golden-furred Manx mix was attacked by a dog in late August and left with 12 stitches, a punctured lung and fractured sternum. [Pols emphasis] Stubbs spent nine days in a veterinary hospital before being released to his home in an upstairs room of the general store, where he is said to be recuperating slowly…

…But with Stubbs' recovery going slowly, talk inevitably has turned to succession plans. Exactly how—or whether—to replace Stubbs hasn't been determined. Says Sassan Mossaner, owner of the Denali Brewing Co., "Those are difficult paws to fill."

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado Springs). Could a cat raise more money than Rep. Doug Lamborn?

In our opinion, Mayor Stubbs should be allowed to remain in office until his death, mostly because we're curious to see if the town would mourn Stubbs by having his body lie in state in the town hall.

If Stubbs is forced into retirement, we'd certainly like to see if he would be interested in continuing his political career in Colorado. We'd give Stubbs even odds in a race against Rep. Doug Lamborn, who was the only Colorado lawmaker to vote against the deal to re-open the federal government.

Even a cat wouldn't have cast that vote.

At Least He’s Not Your Party Chair

As Mother Jones reports, the Oregon Republican Party is out of its freakin' mind:

After months of in-fighting, the beleaguered Oregon Republican Party elected a new chairman last weekend. His name is Art Robinson, and he wants to sprinkle radioactive waste from airplanes to build up our resistance to degenerative illnesses. Robinson, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress against progressive Rep. Peter DeFazio in 2010 and 2012, took over after the previous chair resigned in advance of a recall campaign over her alleged financial mismanagement.

Robinson, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry, has marketed himself for the last three decades as an expert on everything from nuclear fallout, to AIDS, to climate science in the pages of a monthly newsletter, Access to Technology, which he published from his compound in the small town of Cave Junction. A quick glance at his writings, which were publicized during his ill-fated challenges to DeFazio, suggest that whatever the failings of the previous party leadership—Democrats now hold all statewide elected offices and control both houses of the state legislature—Robinson brings with him a new set of challenges entirely.

The story goes on to list a number of Robinson's "ideas," including his belief that Climate Change is actually beneficial.

At Least He’s Not Your Governor

Gov. Bob McDonnell likes nice things. Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) likes nice things.

The Washington Post reports, one of the GOP's darling conservative "Tea Party" state governors, outgoing Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, is facing calls to resign before his term ends as revelations of large gifts to family members from a corporate benefactor continue to grow:

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus says he’s “the wrong guy” to ask about whether Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) should resign amid revelations of additional allegations he took improper gifts from a prominent donor…

“I haven’t talked to the governor,” he said. “I know as much as you do. I don’t know the Virginia campaign finance laws. What I do know is Bob McDonnell has done an incredible job as governor. You’re asking the wrong guy.”

Gov. McDonnell has been reeling from the scandal over his relationship to a diet supplement executive, who supplied thousands of dollars for lavish personal spending on McDonnell's family members–and a $6,500 Rolex watch inscribed "71st Governor of Virginia" that McDonnell proudly wears (or least wore) himself. Columnist Ruth Marcus summarizes the fall of the once-enormously popular McDonnell, calling for his resignation:

As astonishing is the governor’s technocratic defense: that he is complying with the letter of Virginia disclosure rules, which do not require reporting of gifts to family members. “To, after the fact, impose some new requirements on an official,” McDonnell told a Norfolk radio show, “obviously wouldn’t be fair.”

But gifts and entanglements like these are simply wrong, a violation of the governor’s duty to citizens, whatever the rules. That McDonnell doesn’t get this basic point makes him unfit for office. Obviously.

Like we've said previously, Colorado's "ethics in government" law, Amendment 41, isn't perfect–Scott Gessler will naturally be first to agree–but the situation in Virginia provides reductio ad absurdum proof that you need to have something. More than just a "loophole," Virginia's status quo seems almost guaranteed to result in corruption.

Or maybe something besides the proverbial cream rises to the top in Virginia GOP politics.
