Muscle Building for Teenagers

I took my first weight lifting class in my junior year of high school, and I was instantly hooked. I loved working out, and could not wait to start building pounds of new muscle. When I look back on those days now I am aware of a laundry list of mistakes that I was making that greatly reduced the progress I could have made.

When I see teenagers training at the gym now, many of them are making the same mistakes I made 20 years ago, and I usually go out of my way to help them improve their technique and optimize their training programs. In this article I will share some valuable tips to help teenagers build muscle the right way.

Keep it Simple

When I was in high school I tried to perform the routines I read about in Muscle & Fitness magazines the ones professional bodybuilders were using. I did not know at the time that these bodybuilders were using copious amounts of anabolic steroids, and that the routines they performed were inappropriate for a 16 year old kid training naturally. If I had it to do over again I would stick to basic exercises like:

teen muscle tipsBench PressOverhead PressDeadliftBarbell RowsSquats

I would train five days per week and take two days off, and my goal would be to slowly but steadily get stronger on these basic lifts. There is no need to do anything fancy, it is the simple stuff that works especially for beginners.

Eat for Success

I did not yet understand this when I was 16, but nutrition is the key to building muscle even more so that weight training. It took me several years to figure this out, and when I did my gains went through the roof. Teenagers are notorious for eating terrible diets; lots of fast food, junk food, and inadequate nutrients. This sort of undisciplined eating will sabotage your muscle building as well as your health, and will have you literally wasting your time in the gym.

To gain muscle you have to eat adequate amounts of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates. If you are living on Taco Bell, Pizza and Oreos you will not be able to develop the muscular physique you are after.

Consistency is Key

Building muscle takes time it will not happen overnight. It takes a consistent effort, month after month, both in the gym and at the dinner table. Many teenagers have a hard time sticking to their routine week in and week out for months at a time but this is exactly what it takes to pack on appreciable amounts of muscle mass.

It is important to get your weight training and nutrition plans dialed in and stay consistent on both fronts. The guys who can do this will experience steady muscle growth, while those who are on and off will merely be treading water, and will be lucky to make any gains at all.

Health Benefits of Building Muscle

For most people benefits of muscle building are limited to good looks only. But over the years, researches have discovered that building muscles comes with far more benefits that all lead to a better and healthy life. Some of the benefits of muscle building include:

couple working out

Reducing the risk of falls and fractures

It is not uncommon for old people to fall and break their bones. This happens because we all start to lose muscle mass after the age of 30 and our bones start growing weaker as we grow older. As a result, most old people fall easily and, because their bones are already weak, they also snap easily. But such falls are rare among those who continue to exercise throughout their lives. This is because their muscles are strong enough to support their limbs and their main body frame.

The Looks, Of Course

The obvious benefit of building muscles is that one ends up with a good, looking body. Some men prefer a heavy, pumped look that oozes power and confidence while others prefer a lean but strong, chiseled body that signals speed and agility. Women, too, look good when they get defined muscles in the right places.

Increasing Endurance

This is just common sense. A person with stronger muscles will carry heavier weights for longer distances. That also applies to endurance during exercising. If your muscles are stronger, you will be able to lift more weights and do more repetitions. Additionally, your muscle strength will also determine your endurance levels when doing cardio exercises or aerobics.

Muscle Building Increases Body Metabolism

This simply means that your body is able to burn calories faster during exercise and even when you are at rest. Those who moved from being a couch potato to being a chiseled, gym fanatic understand very well that life on the couch was a constant cycle of being tired. But once they got used to exercising they rarely feel tired and they even sleep better at night.

Healthy benefits to the body

Good metabolism also brings additional health benefits. For instance, the increased metabolism can help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as reducing chronic pain, depression and other mental health disorders. Some people even get improved skin due to continued sweating during exercise. As a result, their skin ends up with open and well-ventilated pores that are free of dirt and dead tissue.

Reduced Injury Risk

Strong muscles also help in protecting delicate parts of the body. For instance, rock-hard abs can help protect the kidneys, the liver and other organs in the abdomen against heavy blows from fists or objects. In the same way, strong muscles can protect your bones by absorbing the impact of blows.

There are many benefits of muscle building. As you start or continue exercising, you will be able to experience these and many more other benefits. But one thing is certain: you will look great!

Muscle Building Tips for Women

The majority of women who are trying to get into better shape focus on one thing, and one thing only losing weight. They believe that simply getting rid of excess body fat will give them the perfect body they strive for. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Adequate muscular development is a must for women who want to have a curvy, shapely physique, and losing fat is not enough to get there.

Luckily, females do not need to gain pounds and pounds of muscle to look their best like males do. A little bit here and a little bit there is all it takes to creative a beautiful, feminine shape. Below I have included some helpful tips for women who want to bulk up in the right places to round out their physiques.

six pack abs female exerise

Work the Right Muscles

Working all the muscles in the body equally will not create a striking female form. Some should be worked more, and some should not be worked at all. Muscles that should be worked most include:

ShouldersUpper ChestLower absHamstringsGluteus muscles

Those that females should avoid training directly include:

TrapeziusObliquesUpper backVMOCalves

Adhering to this strategy will allow a woman to emphasize the right curves and lines that make a beautiful female body and avoid building muscle in areas that will disrupt the aesthetics of the ideal female form.

Work in the Right Repetition Range

I see a lot of ladies in the gym doing sets of 20 or more repetitions with weights that would make a paperweight feel heavy. This does precisely nothing to enhance the physique, and is little more than a waste of time. Women will achieve the best results with sets between 8 and 16 repetitions. The resistance used must also be adequate to make the set feel challenging. If the weights are too light the body will not be forced to grow to adapt to the new stress.

Push Yourself

Just because you are a woman does not mean your weight workouts should be easy. You will have to push yourself in the gym, and force your body to do things that may be a bit uncomfortable at times. This will not create a masculine looking physique as many females fear. It is a necessary part of the equation, and one too often overlooked. When you leave the gym your muscles should feel pumped and tight. It is a workout after all not a spa treatment.

A Long Term Approach

Females have far less testosterone than males, which means they will not be able to build new muscle tissue as quickly. While a man may follow an 8-12 week program with good results, it may take a woman 16-24 weeks to achieve noticeable results. Commit yourself to the process and do not get discouraged if results seem to be coming slowly. Just keep at it and the results will eventually come.

Motivation For Muscle Building

When starting a new muscle building program motivation will be high, as you will be quite keen to put some new slabs of muscle on your physique. But what happens five or six weeks later when you are tired, unmotivated, and have to work late? Will you still have the discipline to make it to the gym?

For most people the answer to this question will be no. Staying consistently motivated to push your body to its limits day after day in the gym can be quite the challenge. As humans, we are most excited about things when they are new. I like to call this the “honeymoon phenomenon”. Novelty and motivation seem to go hand in hand for us, and as novelty fades, motivation takes the trip along with it.

gym exercise

Okay, So What Can I Do About It?

The trick to getting around this lies in the fact that novelty can be manufactured as well as discovered. In other words, it will be up to you to create novelty when it appears to have waned.

When couples get in a rut with their intimate lives, they tend to mix things up a bit to add something fresh to the relationship. They may take a trip, get involved with a new pastime, or spice things up in the bedroom with a new toy or two. You have to apply this same philosophy to your workouts.

Keep it Challenging

One of the best ways to achieve this is to set small performance goals in your workouts. Let us suppose that in your last chest workout you bench pressed 225 pounds for 6 reps. When your next chest workout comes around you could go for 7 reps. This does not only work with increasing reps or weight you could add an extra set and attempt to hit your target repetitions again. If you use a bit of creative thinking I am sure you can think of a lot of ways to add these little mini-challenges to your workouts.

Change Exercise Variations

If you have been performing back squats for the last few months, switch to front squats or Zercher squats and set some new performance goals for yourself. When you master new exercises you will promote more growth as well as improve the performance of your nervous system in response to a variety of stimuli.

Make a Motivational Mural

Go through every muscle magazine and website you can think of and pick out a bunch of images that inspire you. Cut or print them out and make a mural out of them, and put it somewhere you can look at it often. If you feel like slacking off and missing the gym take a good long look at your mural and remind yourself of what your goals are, and how badly you want to achieve them.

You may have to work at it a bit to keep yourself motivated, but the tips above will make the job a little easier, and keep you steadily moving toward your ultimate goals.

Exercise for Muscle Building

If you want to gain muscle, and have a physique that you can be proud to show off, you will need to choose wisely from the many available exercise routines for muscle building. While there are many different types of programs that will help you build mass, not all are created equal, so you will want to pick one that is appropriate for your:

GoalsBody TypeTraining ExperienceAvailable Equipment

Since these variables may be different from one trainee to the next, there is no one-size-fits-all plan that will work for everyone. The creators of the more reputable exercise routines for muscle building are aware of this fact, and offer regimens that can be easily customized to meet the needs of specific users. This is the major difference, in my opinion, between a decent program and a great one.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

As you might imagine, a 23 year old man who wants to gain 50 pounds of mass will require a different workout plan that a 53 year old man looking to gain a couple pounds and a bit of strength. The ideal regimens for these two men may have a lot in common but there will definitely be some key differences. If they were both to follow the same exact plan, neither of them would likely achieve optimal results.

Customizable Programs

A solid workout system will allow individual users to make adjustments to the daily workouts based on their unique requirements. Some of these key variables will include:

Training VolumeTraining FrequencyWorkout IntensityNutritional Considerations

Using our previous example of the 23 year-old and 53-year old trainees, the younger man would most likely use higher training volume and workout intensity, while also consuming more calories, as compared to his older counterpart. These subtle but important differences will be the difference between minimal results and optimal results.

What to Look For

When you are evaluating various exercise routines for muscle building, read the description of the different regimens carefully to see whether the training parameters can be adjusted or customized to suit your individual needs. Steer clear of one-size-fits-all plans, as they will usually lead to sub par results.

Free Exercise Routines for Muscle Building

You will be able to find many different workout systems on the internet, some of which are even free. However, as the old saying goes; you get what you pay for. The customizable systems that offer the best results will usually be paid programs. The good news is that these training systems are created by fitness professionals with years of experience, and will include specific recommendations to help you reach your goals as quickly as possible.

Another big plus is that these exercise routines for muscle building are usually sold with a money back guarantee. This allows you to try out the regimen for a few weeks, and if it is not a good fit you can get a refund. I recommend only purchasing products that offer such a guarantee, as it will protect you from taking a loss.

Benefits of Building Muscles

There are a lot of benefits from muscle building. Not only would it make the person look good and attractive but it has several health benefits as well as it improves lifestyle. Surely a toned abs and good biceps are very nice to look at. But men are not the only ones getting more benefits, but women as well. Women need not to have bulky muscles like the men do to achieve lean muscles. Toning down and simple weights can do a lot in muscle building and improving lifestyle. Listed and discussed below are some of the benefits:

Helps to Manage your weight

Maintaining your ideal weight is one of the benefits of muscle building. When you build muscles, you increase your rate of metabolism and by increasing metabolism; you can easily burn fat and calories. Notice how athletes can manage their weight easily, this is because they have developed their muscles well that it would be very easy for them to increase or decrease their weight. Having more muscles would mean that calories will be easily used up by the body rather than being converted into fat.

Improve Strength and Energy Levels

One of the very obvious benefits is to be able to improve strength and energy. Additional muscle means additional strengths. Men would love muscle building because of this reason. This means that carrying heavy objects will be a lot easier. Women who develop and build muscles can also improve their daily activities and carrying heavier bags would not be a problem anymore. Having more muscles would mean that energy levels are increasing; therefore work can be more fun with lesser stress.

Building muscles would also improve your exercise regimen and you can do a lot of exercises without much difficulty. This is because your stamina is improving. You can jog faster and longer as well as able to maintain and improve weight lifting. This will make exercising fun to do too. Combining weight lifting with cardio workouts will greatly increase muscle tone.

Reduced Injury Risks

Another benefit to muscle building is reducing injury to the vital organs inside the body. Muscles cover and protect the vital organs inside especially muscles on the abdomen. They protect the liver, kidney, and stomach from injury such as in contact sports. Muscles also protect joints from injury too. Having a developed muscle will increase strength and endurance therefore protecting the bones from injury of all sorts.

Reduced Health Risks

You also reduce the risk of cardiovascular-related diseases. Muscle building improves blood circulation throughout the body therefore nutrients and oxygen are properly circulated throughout the system. More muscles mean less fat. This will reduce the risk of heart problems and many other chronic diseases.

Other advantages also include reduced osteoporosis especially among women. Working on your muscles would mean working your bones too, making it stronger especially for women who are very prone to osteoporosis. Having more muscle mass will help support bones in its daily activities. This will make climbing staircases and lifting heavy objects easier. Foods For Building Muscle

Just about every guy knows that you need to hit the gym and throw some heavy weights around if you want to build muscle. Something far fewer realize is that how you eat will be the determining factor in how successful your efforts in the gym are. Training with weights causes micro-trauma to the muscle, which, when repaired, will result in muscular gains if you eat the right foods in the right amounts.

The Most Common Mistakes

There are two main nutrition mistakes people make when trying to build muscle:

Not eating enoughEating the wrong foods

Under-Eating

Guys who do not eat enough are usually concerned with putting on fat, or simply do not have the kind of appetite that will allow them to comfortably put away the necessary calories to grow. This is why counting calories, at least at the start of your muscle building phase, is so important.

To effectively put on muscle without gaining fat you will have to consume somewhere between 500 and 1,000 calories over and above your daily requirements, the specifics of which will be determined by your sex, age, and lean body mass. If you are not counting calories you are merely guessing, and if you are not getting the results you are after, you will not be able to make calculated adjustments to your diet.

Poor Food Choices

Eating the wrong foods is something I have had firsthand experience with. When I was much younger I determine that I would have to eat 4,100 calories per day to gain muscle efficiently. There were many days when I added up my calories at 10:00pm only to find that I was 1,000 calories short of my mark. In a panic I would head to Wendy’s and get three cheeseburgers, large fries and a frosty to make up the difference.

This got me to my desired caloric intake for the day, but over the course of eight weeks it also got me noticeably fatter. If you want to gain muscle and stay lean, you have to get you calories from the right sources and the drive thru is not one of them.

Muscle Building Staples

I have experimented with many different foods during my 17 years as a fitness buff, and through trial and error have come up with a list of foods that I find particularly beneficial for putting on muscle without that annoying layer of fat that sometimes comes with it.

Steel Cut Oats

Just soak these in water overnight no cooking necessary. They provide complex carbohydrates and plenty of fiber, and are the foundation of a good muscle building breakfast.

Whole Eggs

Eggs contain complete proteins, healthy fats, and are full of nutrients, making them an ideal addition to your diet.

Almond Butter

Almond butter is another great source of healthy fats and vital nutrients. I put a couple tablespoons in my oatmeal and add raisins, bananas and protein powder to round off the perfect breakfast.

Grass Fed Beef

Grass fed beef is much healthier than its corn fed counterpart, and I make sure I eat it at least twice per week when trying to add muscle.

Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Bread

This bread is made from sprouted grains instead of flour, and a couple pieces with almond butter along with a protein shake make a great lunch.

Choosing a Muscle Building Program

There is more than one way to skin a cat, as the old saying goes and it certainly applies to building muscle. Regimens with vastly differing parameters can result in considerable muscular gains as long as the program satisfies a few critical criteria. If you are searching for a new routine to help you pack on a few pounds of muscle, the following questions will help you find what you are looking for.

Does the program use the principle of progressive overload?

Progressive overload occurs when the muscles are exposed to more stimuli over time to induce muscle damage significant enough to facilitate new growth. If you want to make appreciable gains, your workouts must push you out of your comfort zone, and put sufficient stress on the muscles. Without this, the body will see no need to build new tissue to handle the increased workload it is faced with.

A well designed regimen will include some type of progression from week to week to make this happen, so this is something to look for when evaluating potential programs to follow. Only minimal growth can be achieved without this.

Does the plan include sound nutritional parameters to follow?

The work you do in the gym lays the foundation for growth, but the raw materials needed to complete the job are provided through your diet. Adequate protein must be consumed to provide the body with the amino acids used to rebuild damaged tissue. Dietary fats are used in the production of sex hormones that play a vital role in the body building process. While carbohydrates are not essential to the process, they do provide the body with the energy it needs to complete the challenging workouts that will promote growth.

Using a school analogy, going to the gym is like attending class, and your diet can be thought of as the homework and studying you do at home. Both elements are crucial to success, and any reputable training system will place due emphasis on both aspects.

Does the system include smart supplement recommendations?

Let me start by saying that supplements only account for a small percentage of actual results, and are often overemphasized. That being said, supplements like protein powder, creatine, and fish oil will help the body throughout the processes involved in synthesizing new tissue, and are therefore important additions to any good program.

While you should be a bit leery of any plan that seems like it was just created to pitch a bunch of supplements, you want to follow a routine that recognizes the benefits of these staples and allows you to reap them.

Are the results being promised realistic?

If you see ridiculous claims on the sales page like “You will gain 20 pounds in 8 weeks”, keep moving. Gains like this can only be achieved with anabolic steroids, which we I do not recommend. The body can only naturally build about 2 pounds of muscle per month, so avoid programs that promise results that are too good to be true.

Health Benefits of Building Muscle

For most people benefits of muscle building are limited to good looks only. But over the years, researches have discovered that building muscles comes with far more benefits that all lead to a better and healthy life. Some of the benefits of muscle building include:

nutrition

Beginners Guide Muscle Building

The way you start your muscle building campaign can be one of the most crucial factors that determine if you will succeed in your goal to get ripped and get the six pack abs you have been dreaming about for a long time. Unless you are super motivated then you need to have a good positive start combined with realistic expectations early on. Later on once you start to see real results, these will act as an incentive on their own to continue with your muscle building program.

You may have tried and failed in the past and this is usually down to the fact you did not prepare yourself and plan your campaign properly in the beginning. Therefore I have put together a guide for beginners that should give you that initial push and boost to get you started in the right manner:

beforeafter

Your Body – Visit Your Doctor and/or a Dietician

I would advise you to go and visit your physician and get a full physical done to analyze your physical condition. Once complete, your doctor should be able to provide information on any weakness and strengths you should be aware of before you start building muscles. This should help you avoid any potential injuries or strain as you will find out which parts of your body may be sustainable to injuries and which parts you can go all out with confident in the fact that your body can handle the strain.

It is also a good idea to go and see a dietician who will be able to help you construct a customized food and nutrition plan based on your body type and muscle building objectives. Consuming the right kind of foods is essential for individuals looking to build muscles.

Exercise – Register at your local Gym or get a Personal trainer

We are all different and as such have different types of motivating factors that help us to achieve our goals. Fore example, some people are able to build muscles at home using just their own personal equipment. Others may prefer to join a gym where they are surrounded by others with similar body building goals. There are also those individuals who are motivated by having a friend with whom they can workout with together.

People with the extra disposable income can even take a step further and hire their very own personal trainer. Your personal trainer will be able to put together a personalized nutrition and exercise plan while also giving you the daily motivation you may need. The personal trainer would also keep a progress chart and ensure you stay on course and do not deviate from the plan.

Nutrition – Follow a healthy dietary plan

What you eat will have a significant impact on weather you build the kind of muscles you are seeking. You need to eat the right kind of foods that is balanced and consists of a lot of energy boosting nutrients. The best practice is for you to consume small meals at regular intervals every day. So you need to be aware that eating the right meals whilst undergoing your training regime is crucial if you want to get ripped.

During the process of trying to gain six pack abs, it is important to have a diet plan that is both balanced and composed of energy packed foods that enhance the muscle building process. It is recommended that you eat smaller, regular meals which enable you to maintain a steady weight whilst at the same time your body stays energized by getting exactly what it needs. You need to do yourself a favor by realizing that getting those six pack abs requires a combination of body building and healthy diet.

Finally

All of the above may not be ideal for everyone as it may be expensive in some countries to get a physical checkup but highly advisable if you have any niggling doubts about your physical condition. Some people may not be able to see a dietician due to the costs involved and may need to carry out their own research and build their own diet plan. You can also try out the Muscle Maximizer Kyle Leon program.

Teenage Muscle Building

The teenage body is hard to strengthen because it is still in a growing phase. It is important when muscles building that thing are done correctly in order to help growth. When done improperly serious injury can fall on a teenager, that may affect them their entire life if they push themselves to hard, or force them to do things that they are unable to do. It is possible for teenagers to build muscle without hazard, but it must be done slowly and properly. If at any point a teenager pushes themselves too far, or ignores the structure that a proper workout gives them they will see more bad results than good.

When wanting to build muscle it is important to have a strong diet structure. No matter how badly one wants to exercise if their body can’t keep up they will end up asleep instead of doing push-ups. The proper diets helps the body gain muscle, and recover and when it is neglected the body suffers as well. It takes a great deal of energy to keep up an intense workout regimen, and neglecting the food that your body needs will cause it to retaliate on you. You will feel more fatigue than usual, and go through a great deal more pain than you should.teen body builder

A good diet is important, but a good workout regimen is vital in order to build muscle. Most teenagers believe they can just go into the gym jump on random machines, and they will soon have the perfect body. This isn’t the case in fact if you don’t have a well-rounded workout regimen you will find yourself having huge arms and tiny legs, or a big chest and small triceps, or even well-developed abs but a back that lacks any muscular structure. In order for you to have a body built strong in all aspects you must be able to use a workout program that works out your entire body, and not just areas you feel need to be improved.

With a good regimen it is important that you have good form as well. Doing the best exercises in the world means nothing if you do them improper, and with improper form you will hurt your body more than help it. The best way to exercise is to do fewer reps with perfect form, than do more and get progressively worse as time goes on.

The best way to build muscle is to stay consistent. That means doing your workouts on a regular basis, and also resting when you need to. Pushing yourself won’t give you results faster, there is a great deal of patience that is required when building muscle. Using supplements won’t help you generate muscles faster either. It is much healthier to work on a nutrition program, and change your diet than to use supplements to get the intended effect. With proper knowledge, and restraint teenagers can build muscle properly while still growing into a very strong and healthy body.

Workout Routines for Muscle Building

I remember when I was in high school I watched Conan the Barbarian one night with a bunch of friends. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in his prime back then, and his physique was awe inspiring. After seeing that I knew I had to start spending some serious time in the gym. This was before the birth of the internet, so I had to get my workout plans from Muscle & Fitness, the premier bodybuilding magazine of the time.

Unfortunately, these workouts were for much more advanced individuals, so I made only minimal progress by following them. Looking back on those days now that 20 years have passed, I sure wish I knew then what I know now.

body building

Intelligent Design

No, I am not talking about the universe here just your workout program. If you want to put on muscle and impress the girls when you take your shirt off, it is imperative that you follow a routine that is properly designed to help you meet your goals. If you grab a muscle magazine and start doing a program designed for a professional bodybuilder you will, in all likelihood, fail to get the desired results.

Start with the Basics

A lot of guys want to make their workouts quite complex and advanced from the get go but this is a mistake. The best approach to take when you are getting started is a simple one. You will perform basic compound exercises like squats, presses, rack pulls and chin-ups, and eat a variety of healthy foods.

It really is that simple at the beginning. You do not have to worry about drop sets, partial reps, undulating personalization, or any other fancy workout methodologies. Below I will lay out a good sample workout you can follow.

Sample Workout

For this workout you will be training for about an hour three days per week. We will use Monday, Wednesday, Friday as an example, but you can pick the days that are convenient for you.

Monday

Monday will be the day you train back and biceps.

Chin-ups: 4 sets of 8 repsHigh Face Pulls: 4 sets of 10-12 repsRack Pulls: 4 sets of 6-8 reps

Wednesday

On Wednesday you will train lower body and abdominal.

Barbell Squats: 6 sets of 6-12 repsCal Raises: 6 sets of 10-14 repsReverse hanging Crunches: 4 sets of 12 reps

Friday

On Friday we will be training chest, shoulders and triceps.

Dumbbell Bench Press: 6 sets of 6-12 repsPush Press: 4 sets of 6 repsSkull Crushers: 4 sets of 8-10 reps

As you can see, this workout plan is quite simple, and covers all of the major muscle groups in the body. Following a routine like this for 16 weeks or so will give you a good foundation of muscle that you can build on in the future. You will also gain a good amount of strength from this program, which will prime you for muscle gains in the following weeks. Remember to eat a calories surplus of healthy foods along with your training to maximize results.

Novelty and motivation seem to go hand in hand for us, and as novelty fades, motivation takes the trip along with it.

man weight training

How to Choose a Muscle Building Program

If building lean muscle mass as quickly as possible is your goal, you will need to choose a program that gives you training and nutrition parameters to support it. Some might think they can just show up at the gym a few times a week and it will all take care of itself but this is not likely to happen. There are some rather specific criteria that must be met both in terms of resistance training and nutrition to efficiently build new muscle tissue.

To ensure that you are not wasting your time in the gym and the kitchen, it is best to choose a program designed specifically to facilitate muscle growth. There are thousands of such guides available online, so how does one go about choosing?

man wokring out at the gym

Criteria for Choosing a Program

If you were buying a tax guide you would want to choose one written by an experienced tax accountant, right? Following this logic you will want to choose a muscle building guide written by an experienced trainer someone who has worked with numerous individuals with similar goals, and who has helped them make significant progress.

Given the potential financial gain involved in creating fitness and weight loss products, a lot of inexperienced individuals have been throwing together training programs just to make a buck. These systems have not been carefully tested and tweaked with hundreds of clients the way more reputable programs have, so you never really know what you are getting. For this reason, I highly recommend purchasing a program created by a true fitness expert with years of experience.

Individually Customized

The process of building muscle can be complicated, and factors like your age, body type, training experience, and overall health will all play a role in determining the ideal approach for you. Choose a program that addresses your specific needs for best results. For example, if you are a 19 year old guy who weighs 130lbs and cannot seem to put on weight, you will want to get a program designed for hard-gainers.

Full Featured

A good program will usually include training videos and some other extras rather than just an eBook. Also, make sure the program includes nutritional guidelines to follow, as proper nutrition is crucial to building muscle. The more detailed and specific the program gets the better.

Time Constraints

Before choosing a program it is important to accurately assess how much time you will be able to commit to your training. While some programs can easily be completed with minimal free time, others will be more demanding, so it is an important factor to consider.

Required Equipment

Some programs only require a flat surface to exercise on, while others require access to a full featured gym or health club. If you have limited equipment or lack gym access be sure you choose a program that you can follow with what you have. Unlike fat loss, muscle building does require a certain amount of equipment, so you should probably plan on getting a gym membership if you are serious about making real progress.

Muscle Building For Beginners

Most of us receive spam in our in-boxes advertising all types of products to help build muscle. These scams are just looking to make a quick buck off of desperate consumers by making false promises about their products. Most of us know that the best way to build muscle is by following a proper diet and regular exercise regimen, but unscrupulous advertisers promise us buff and ripped bodies in no time if we buy their gym equipment or use their magic diet pills. The first step in building a strong muscular body is to stop believing false claims and start doing what really works.

Nutrition

A proper diet for building muscle must contain adequate protein, as it is made up of the amino acids that the body uses to build new muscle tissue. There are several excellent sources of protein that are also fairly inexpensive.

Lean meats like chicken and turkey are good choices. Eggs are also a great source of protein, as they contain a variety of minerals and vitamins and are quite inexpensive. Another cheap source of quality protein is tuna, which adds fatty acids like omega-3 oils as well as lean protein to your diet. The best type of canned tuna is in water rather than oil, as it is lower in fat and calories.

bodybuilding beginner with measuring tapeProtein powders are another source of lean, high quality protein. Whey, beef and egg powders are recommended since they are easily digestible and can control blood sugar levels. You should try and avoid soy protein powder, though, as it has poor bio-availability compared to the other mentioned sources. Decent vegetable sources of protein include rice and beans combinations.

Training

In addition to following an intelligent nutrition regimen, proper exercise is required to build new muscle tissue. Exercises should be chosen to work all of the major muscle groups, with compound exercises that work several muscle groups together being the most highly recommended. To train small muscle groups like the biceps, some isolation exercises like barbell curls can be done as well. A program containing both compound and isolation exercises is ideal for the balanced development of all muscle groups.

Cardiovascular exercise is important for a healthy heart, greater endurance and increased blood flow, and will also cut excess body fat. In order to efficiently build muscle, trainees must perform challenging workouts that force the body to grow.

Recovery

Proper rest and adequate sleep are also important aspects of a good muscle building program. Sleep allows damaged muscles to be regenerated and repaired. Poor sleep leads to a diminished metabolism, which can cause fat gain and minimize muscle building. Your body does not build new muscle tissue while you are in the gym; it is built while you’re sleeping. A full 8 hours of sleep each night will ensure that your body has the adequate time and resources to recover and build new muscle.

Conclusion

Building muscle does not require absurd diet pills, illegal steroids or fancy workout equipment. It all boils down to diet, exercise and sleep. Manage these three variables appropriately and you’ll start seeing great results! I would recommend you also check out the Muscle Maximizer for those seeking an effective and natural muscle building program.
