Gary Hart Ponders Unanswered JFK Questions

Former Sen. Gary Hart (D-CO). Former Sen. Gary Hart (D-CO).

Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Democratic President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. The news this week has been full of stories recalling the assassination, its impact on American politics, and questions that remain unanswered to this today. Apropos, here's an interview of former Sen. Gary Hart of Colorado published in the Huffington Post yesterday. Hart was a member of one of the committees set up in the 1970s to revisit questions from the 1963 assassination, questions that remained unanswered after the Warren Commission's report in 1964.

According to Sen. Hart, they're still very much unanswered:

Hart served on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Agencies, known as the Church committee, after chairman Frank Church. He recalled that while the committee was investigating the connection between the assassination, the Mafia and plots against Cuban President Fidel Castro, two of the three main figures involved were also killed.

"It's amazing to me that American journalism never followed up on that story very much, because if you found out who killed those two guys, you might have some really interesting information on your hands," Hart, who served as a Democratic senator from Colorado for two terms, told HuffPost in a recent interview…

The deaths of [Johnny] Roselli and [Sam] Giancana in 1975 and 1976 occurred amid the Church committee's ongoing investigations surrounding Kennedy's assassination. That coincidence, Hart said, was suspicious enough to warrant press attention, and he was surprised that the press didn't jump on the story.

"I was always amazed in that particular instance of the CIA-Mafia connection and the Cuban connection 12 years — coming up 12 years — after Kennedy was killed that somebody didn't go after that story," he said. "New York Times, Washington Post; anybody. And they didn't. They reported the deaths and that was it, and the strange quirky coincidence, you know, but nothing more."

…Hart tried to uncover the truth about the Kennedy assassination and the "big unanswered questions." He said he worked with fellow Church committee member and former Sen. Richard Schweiker (R-Penn.), but ultimately ran out of resources and leads. During an ill-fated presidential bid in the 1980s, Hart vowed he'd reopen the Kennedy investigation if elected. In retrospect, he said it "was probably a stupid thing to do," citing death threats he received. [Pols emphasis]

Fascinating reading for sure. Although much information about the JFK assassination has been released to the public, many thousands of pages of documents and other evidence remains classified. Perhaps the whole story of what happened on November 22nd, 1963 will be known in our lifetimes–or, like Jim Garrison portrayed by Kevin Costner warned in the movie JFK, maybe our children's. Until then, it will remain the subject of speculation; some baseless, and some fueled by legitimately unanswered questions like those posed by Sen. Hart.

Candidates should face “personhood” questions from journalists in 2014, as another amendment heads to ballot

(Promoted by Colorado Pols)

Activists led by Personhood USA yesterday submitted over 50,000 more signatures than the 86,000 required to make the 2014 election ballot, making it likely voters will cast ballots next year on a measure that would add "unborn human beings" to the definition of a "person" and "child" in Colorado's criminal code.

Backers and opponents of the measure disagree on whether it would affect abortion rights, but the fact is that supporters of the amendment, including its designated representative and a spokesperson for Colorado Right to Life, have referred to it as "personhood."

So this means it's likely that political candidates will face questions next year about their views on the personhood concept, under which all abortion would be banned, even for rape and incest, as well as common forms of birth control.

In 2010, the last time a personhood amendment was on the Colorado ballot, all Republican candidates for Governor and Senate supported the measure.

This year, most top-line Republican candidates are on record supporting personhood (See below), while no Democrat has done so publicly. The Colorado Statesman's Peter Marcus has sought comments from this year's crop of candidates, but he's faced some resistance.

Coverage of the yesterday's signature submission, including informative pieces by CBS4's Shaun Boyd and the Colorado Independent's John Tomasic, didn't provided a tally of personhood support among top candidates. So I will supply it below:

Governor

State Sen. Greg Brophy endorsed personhood in 2008 telling 7News at the time, "Clearly it'?s always the right time to take the stand for the sanctity of life." Colorado Right to Life writes on its blog that Brophy "supports personhood" and is "pro-life with no exceptions."

Secretary of State Scott Gessler is apparently not on record on personhood.

Former lawmaker Mike Kopp "supports personhood" and is "pro-life with no exceptions," according to the Colorado Right to Life blog.

Former Rep. Tancredo supports personhood.

U.S. Senate

Sen. Randy Baumgardner is "100% pro-life with no exceptions" and "supports personhood," according to the 2012 Colorado Right to Life blog.

Weld Country DA Ken Buck withdrew his support for the personhood amendment in 2010, but stood behind is position against abortion, even in the cases of rape and incest.

Sen. Owen Hill is "pro-life" and "supports personhood" according to CRTL in 2012.

U.S. House

Rep. Mike Coffman is listed by CRTL as a personhood supporter, and he has been held up by Personhood USA as a model personhood-supporting candidate. He's against abortion for rape and incest.

Rep. Cory Gardner supports personhood.

Rep. Doug Lamborn supports personhood.

Rep. Scott Tipton is not on record as a personhood supporter.

Greg Brophy Nimbly Dances Around Obvious Secession Questions

ncflag

As the Grand Junction Sentinel's Charles Ashby reports:

[I]f some people in several of the counties in his expansive northeast Colorado Senate district have their way, the Wray Republican who’s seeking the GOP nomination to challenge Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper soon could live in another state.

The state of North Colorado.

Brophy, who’s in town to attend this weekend’s Club 20 fall meeting, said that while he encouraged commissioners in numerous counties in his district to place a 51st state initiative on their November ballots, he isn’t necessarily in favor of the idea…

“I encouraged my county commissioners to move forward with this to catch the governor’s attention and the state Legislature’s attention,” Brophy said. “I think that most of the counties will vote to secede, but it won’t pass through the state Legislature.”

If such a vote passed, though, Brophy said he would be obligated to introduce a measure into the Legislature if his constituents demanded it of him, even though he’s not sure how he would vote on it.

Greg Brophy. Greg Brophy.

?Sen. Greg Brophy's (albeit wholly realistic) lack of confidence in the ultimate success of the movement to split a number of rural Colorado counties, including Brophy's own Yuma County, into the separate state of North Colorado, could upset secession's proponents. If somebody "encouraged" you to do something, but then told a newspaper on the other side of the state that you're not "necessarily in favor" of it, wouldn't you find that a little two-faced?

With that said, it makes an obvious kind of sense that Brophy would keep his options open on how to vote on legislation to allow these counties to secede even if he was its sponsor–after all, he needs to preserve his status as a serious contender for governor of, you know, the rest of Colorado. We've been wondering how Brophy intended to juggle these competing interests.

And the answer is, as delicately as he can.
