Fun With Press Releases: Pat Quinn Edition

We updated The Big Line yesterday, which reminded us that we had forgotten to mention a press release we received on Friday from Democrat Pat Quinn's campaign for State Treasurer. Buried at the bottom of the release, ostensibly about Quinn making the obligatory "64 county state tour," is the mention that he didn't raise much money in Q3:

Pat Quinn began the “Leadership Begins with Listening Tour” in August and will visit the last 7 of Colorado’s 64 counties on October 30th and 31st with a swing through Northeast Colorado.  Quinn raised over $33,000 over three months to support his campaign efforts.  “My campaign will have adequate resources to get my positive message to the people of Colorado as the campaign moves forward.”

If you feel the need to mention, unprompted, that your campaign "will have adequate resources," it's a pretty good sign that your campaign is in trouble of not having "adequate resources." If Quinn could only raise $33,000 in his first quarter — a time when you should be grabbing all of the low-hanging fruit in your rolodex — then he should probably start thinking about where this is really going to end up. Unless Quinn can (and will) self-fund his campaign, he's going to have trouble just maintaining the cash flow to keep things moving forward, nevermind saving up enough money for a serious ad buy.

Full press release after the jump.

Quinn in Home Stretch of 64 County

Leadership Begins with Listening Tour

Broomfield, Colorado. Pat Quinn, Mayor of Broomfield and candidate for State Treasurer, will have visited 57 of Colorado’s 64 counties by Saturday October 5, 2013 as part of Quinn’s “Leadership Begins with Listening Tour”.  For photos and accounts from stops along the tour visit www.facebook.com/PatQuinnForTreasurer.

“While many candidates were holed up in their offices dialing for dollars, I have been traveling the state talking to Coloradans about their current challenges and their hopes for Colorado’s future,” stated Quinn. “From one corner of the state to the other, the concerns are the same: how to create and maintain sustainable economies that create jobs, balancing oil and gas production with environmental protection, managing transparency and fiscal responsibility at all levels of government, and maintaining quality public education.”

“My positive message of the successes we have enjoyed in Broomfield resonates with people all over Colorado.  Since 2007 Broomfield’s debt has been reduced by 25% and we continue to attract primary employers like DigitalGlobe who announced last month it will move its international headquarters to Broomfield with 1,700 high tech jobs,” continued Quinn.

Chutzpah, The “Right To Choose” Edition

Laura Carno is terribly, terribly clever. Laura Carno is terribly, terribly clever.

Next Saturday, a conservative women's group called the Colorado Women's Alliance will conduct a "Winning With Women Walk" to support the recall effort against Senate President John Morse. What's interesting about this is not the appearance of another Laura Carno-fronted "women's group" in a recall election already crowded with mercenaries, but the wording of their invitation:

Join us as "Winning with Women" takes to the streets to Get Out the Vote for the Recall Elections! Plain and simple, Senator John Morse's policies have hurt Women:  He has denied Women "the right to choose" how to defend ourselves, [Pols emphasis] his tax-and-spend policies have hurt our rural families, and now he wants to burden us with a Billion-dollar tax increase – the largest tax increase in Colorado history! Our families can't afford to have him in office a single day longer!

Morse…has denied women…"the right to choose?" That choice of words was a bit much for Cathy Alderman of Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado, who responded in an understandably irate statement late Friday:

"What Colorado families 'can't afford' is extremist right-wing special interests masquerading as women's advocacy groups," said Cathy Alderman, Vice President of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado. "Senator Morse has been a champion for women and women's health as long as he has been in office. Senator Morse deserves better than misleading attacks from conservative groups who don't care about women or the issues that matter to us." [Pols emphasis]

Particularly after the flap over SD-11 GOP recall successor candidate Bernie Herpin's strained parsing of the (not much) difference between his Pikes Peak Citizens for Life candidate questionnaire responses and the "Personhood" abortion/birth control ban initiatives, rallying women to march against John Morse for "denying women the 'right to choose'" strikes us as too clever by somewhat more than half. We don't care what district you're running in, more women voters are going to associate "the right to choose" with reproductive choice than "the right to choose" any gun your heart desires–especially since Morse didn't ban any woman's "choice" of any legally available gun. True, excepting those who commit domestic violence, but we don't think Laura Carno will find very many women up in arms about that.

Seven days and a wake-up, folks. Until then, expect no limit to what you're asked to accept with a straight face.
